Painted Fireplace Update To update the outdated fireplace original to the 1950s-era house, Justine updated it using charcoal paint in a level finish. For an application, she used a roller made for rough surfaces. This cuts back on the amount of coats needed since the rest of the roller ensures appropriate coverage.
