Armoire The term armoire is of French origin derived from the Latin word "armarium," which means cabinet. It's a freestanding tall cabinet with two doors which open outward. Many armoires possess a drawer or two underneath the doors for additional storage. Unlike ordinary shelving, the contents within an armoire (which can vary from clothes to linens to a wellness television) are hidden from view when the doors are closed. They're made from wood (with alloy hardware) and utilized in bedrooms and living rooms. Their styles can vary from the easiest Shaker style to a more ornate carved appearance.

Bombe Chest The bombe chest gets its name from its rounded edges and shape. This swollen-looking torso is a favorite within the French Quarter style, with originated during Louis XV's reign in the 18th century. Bookshelf Fairly self-explanatory, a bookshelf is a wooden piece of furniture with flat shelves to house books and other ornamental items like pictures or vases. The term is used interchangeably with bookcase — although many in the latter word have glass instances to protect publications from dust. The shelves can be fixed or movable based upon the design.

Breakfront Chest A breakfront torso is a cabinet that is divided into three vertical sections with the center segment projecting out beyond the rest. Buffet Also called a sideboard, a buffet is a classic piece of wood furniture used in dining rooms to hold food dishes in a buffet setting — rather than a more formal sit-down, served meal. The piece is utilized to display china or silver and as storage. It is made up of a flat top, with cupboards and drawers under, supported by legs. The elevation of a buffet is waist-high to accommodate a diner.

Bureau Between Europe and the U.S., agencies are utilized for two completely different purposes. In Europe, a agency is a writing desk. It's a fall-front writing flap which rests in a 45-degree incline when closed. If the hinged flap is open, it displays pigeonholes, small drawers and a little cabinet. If you're in the U.S., a bureau is called a chest of drawers, used for storing clothing. These bureaus often have several drawers and come in a variety of heights. Cabinet A box-shaped piece of wood furniture, cabinets can stand alone in an area, be built to a room or stand alone like a medicine cupboard. Today a cupboard might be made of synthetic material and hold any number of items in the home. The pieces usually have one or two doors which open outward and may contain a lock on the door(s). Chest of Drawers Also called a dresser or bureau, this piece of furniture has multiple flat drawers piled on top of one another that carry clothing items. The wooden pieces are rectangular in shape and typically have short legs which may be straight or curved. A chest comes in 3-, five- or - seven-drawer varieties. China Cabinet Like its name suggests, this kind of cabinet held nice china — according to its history, blue-and-white china especially. Throughout the reign of King William and Queen Mary (1689-1702), Mary (hailing originally from Holland) was fond of this china imported in Europe. She commissioned a cupboard to be made to flaunt her own collection. Now the cupboards are generally tall, rectangular cabinets with a glass doorway to exhibit its contents. Credenza A credenza is interchangeable with a buffet or sideboard. It is a horizontal cabinet with closed shelves used for storage. Cupboard A cupboard is a sort of cabinet and often made of wood. It is used to house numerous household items like food, dishes or linens. As the name suggests it was one time a simple board or table that held cups or cups. This piece dates back to the Middle Ages. Nightstand Also referred to as a night table or bedside table, this piece is nearly always found beside a mattress. Its purpose is to store things which could be needed by a person prior to, during or after the night is over. Before modern plumbing, the nightstand was the normal spot to find a chamber pot. Because of its original purpose, the layout was originally small cabinets (occasionally outfitted with a drawer) to hold the pot. Made from wood, it is made up of level surface, a pair of cabinets or cupboards and one or numerous drawers. The height is waist-high to accommodate a guest serving him or herself at a buffet dinner. Writing Desk A writing desk is a piece of furniture that's typically found in a house office; it can aptly be called a compact office itself. Initially its purpose is for writing handwritten letters (today it could be for a notebook). It often features a shirt which may be closed to conceal current work and protect the surface. This function can be achieved through a rolling apparatus or could be folded. The main surface could be folded down to provide more room inside the room.
